Dental Coverage for Alberta Seniors

Dental emergencies can strike at any time and don’t discriminate based on age. For some seniors, regular dental care may not be affordable.

Provincial Dental Coverage for Seniors

Fortunately the Government of Alberta provides a program called Dental Assistance for Seniors, up to a maximum of $5,000 of coverage every 5 years for select dental services and procedures.

Examples of covered services are:

• examinations and x-rays
• polishing and scaling
• fillings and pain control)
• extractions
• root canals
• procedures relating to gum disease

Limitations on Provincial Dental Coverage for Seniors

Dental coverage is based on the Dental Assistance for Seniors Program Fee Schedule, which establishes both the maximum fee amount and frequency of coverage for eligible services.

Services not covered include:

• dental crowns
• fixed dental bridges
• braces and orthodontics
• dental implants
• fluoride treatments
• teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures
• inlays (gold or gems)

Coverage does not extend to seniors who are traveling outside of the province or country. In this case, be sure to purchase travel insurance to cover any health and dental emergency related expenses.

Eligibility Requirements for Senior Dental Coverage

The following is a list of requirements to be eligible for senior dental coverage programs in Alberta:

• You must provide proof of being 65 years of age or older. Acceptable documents include a birth certificate, old-age pension entitlement form, passport or immigration records, and a Canadian Citizenship Certificate.
• Have lived in the province for a minimum of 3 months prior to applying.
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
• Have an annual income within program guidelines.
